Elwood P. Dowd is a mild-mannered, pleasant man, with one eccentricity: he has an invisible friend in the shape of a six-foot tall rabbit named Harvey. His sister Veta and his niece Myrtle Mae are frustrated in their attempts to help Myrtle Mae break into society and meet men, because Elwood insists on introducing everyone to Harvey. Veta finally agrees to commit Elwood for treatment at Dr. Chumley’s sanitarium. But things don’t work out exactly as planned.
